VegCo – The Farm with a Store

❤❤❤❤🖤 | $$$$$

The tomatoes are awesome, the onions are the best we’ve had, the watermelons actually taste of watermelon, the melons make your melons look malnourished, their sweet peppers are sweet, their lettuce is fresh and the list just goes on.

With supermarkets at one end of the spectrum selling US-imports and farmers’ markets at the other selling a pawpaw for $12 we have to believe that somewhere there has to be a healthy middle ground. Why is it so difficult to walk into a store and buy lots of onions? Big onions! Lots of big onions! Enough big onions for everyone!

Supermarkets would sell you your own mother and farmers’ markets run out of everything all the time so that you’re the person in the queue at 5am with half a stick of ginger in your hand. Why is early just not early enough!?

Recently we’ve been getting wind of VegCo. Their Facebook page popped up and we didn’t know if it was a farm or a shop but it turns out that it’s both… And it seems to have fixed our dilemma… How hard was that?!

They only have one store at the moment and it’s in the gap just after the Automotive Art at Six Roads… We will never shop anywhere else ever again. We thought we were going to check it out and talk about a couple of nice things but, low and behold, they have changed the face of groceries in Barbados forever. Thank. You. Lord.

It’s not complicated; you get there, pick up a basket and walk through three or four aisles of fruit and veg that was farmed and rinsed and put out for sale. That… Is it.

The tomatoes are awesome, the onions are the best we’ve had, the watermelons actually taste of watermelon, the melons make your melons look malnourished, their sweet peppers are sweet, their lettuce is fresh and the list just goes on. They’ve done it! They’ve fixed the problem!

Now that we go all of the time we’re pro’s. You want to go on a Saturday when all of the produce is out and the ladies in the car park are set up with their pudding and souse. They’re closed Sundays but open early every weekday. The last time we went they started selling oranges and mangoes (the good ones) and the manager told us they were trying to get avocados for July. It turns out that they supply for restaurants and hotels already and now they’re opening up to us.

Jaw: pon de ground.

Now for the answer that we know you’re reading for: Not expensive at all. Because they’re selling direct from their own farm and they’ve got fields big enough to feed us all, they’re actually priced perfectly. We cannot believe how inexpensive it is… Especially given how good the produce is.

We’re done with supermarkets. We’re winning.

Rocks: Some of the best and best priced produce you’ll find
Knocks: Can be really far away for a lot of people
